18 Sketches. These were more and more fun as they went on. At first i must admit i found them more challenging as drawing something so abstract and connecting it with meaning.

Saint Basil's Cathedral, Moscow. Chosen purely because it is so far from anything we have in Australia. i love this style, it almost looks fake! Also there were many examples of buildings i was tempted to chose but didn't because they were so new. I think it is as important not to lose sight of where we have been (past) instead of simply focusing on where we are going (future).

I took this photo a few years ago, Luna Park and tweaked it only a little and love the vivid color and contrast. Ferris wheels only represent fun and the almost plastic look of this image i feel places emphasis on this.

I chose this picture from a design blog i check regularly: ABDUZEEDO.
Simply chosen because i liked the use of different medias and use of color was rather effective.

The artist (Daniela) created the image as part of an advertising campaign for corn chips. The campaign can be found at madeforeachother dot com.

VISUAL ARTS HSC 2002

When terrorism was all the rage and largely talked about, i decided that soon enough it will become part of what we do and are. Primarily made out of wax which looks and feels almost fleshlike, a confronting gasmask presented as a desired fashionable piece that was the be overpriced because of the label it was associated with.

Accompanied by my VAPD at the time.

GASCOIGNE: COLLAGE, SHINE, OUTSTANDING

Rosalie Gascoigne's Piece "Medusa" is made up of retro reflective road signs on wood. Made of found objects, there is an extra degree of imagination that is placed in the simplicity that this holds and yet she never seems to feel satisfied even though this and other works of hers seem so complete.

"I think with art you see, you never knock the bastard off, it's always hovering just beyond your reach, just beyond your reach everytime, and if you stretched, to mix your metaphors, you can net another butterfly that you know is out there, but you can't quite get your net around it."

-Gascoigne, The poetry of trash, an interview with Stephen Henley

MOFFAT : TRAP, ESCAPE, DANGEROUS

Taken from Tracy Moffat's - "Adventure series" this work caught me because it told a story more than some of the others i had seen. Created in conjunction with a Brisbane artist, Moffat drew inspiration from newspaper illustrations in the 1970's, she spend weeks putting together the scenes together with models and props she found at various spots around Queensland.
Immersing herself in local Australian culture Moffat found that she found herself obsessing over the series in trying to perfect elements of them to the point of embarrassment. Alternatively, once the paintings had been finished, Moffat then returned to New York where she highly anticipated her return so she could approach Photoshop artists who then could put the works together.

HALL: PLASTIC , CONDUIT, FLUID

Fiona Hall's "White History" created with PVC pipe, plastic, glass beads, silver wire

38.5 × 128 × 43cm encased in a rectangular prism, got my attension as it has a stark almost negative feeling to it. As such an established artist, with a career that spans almost three decades, Fiona Hall explores a variety of areas which can bring about a number of feelings in her audience. For this particular piece, more than that of the other artworks i chose in this section, this one (as a sculpture) i thought had a little more relevance to an architectural stage. I describe it as more of a place rather than telling a story. Similarly using objects to recrate something new a little more like Gascgoine has in this case.
